What Does the Bible Say About..Living With In-Laws?

I would like to know what the bible says about the role of the husband at home. I know that talks about being the head of the house, but what it means. My husband and I have been living with his parents and all this time I have been going through troubles with my mother-in-law. My husband is the favorite son and his mom adores him, and has an obsession with him that worries me. She is jealous of my relationship with her son, she wishes he could be 5 again. The position of my husband in all of that, is smile and ignore because he doesn't want to deal with his mother. I want to move out and he doesn't because of financial situations. He is working and he says that the money is not enough and that we will starve. I can't go through that anymore, I went down with my faith and relationship with God because of what is going on. Please, pray for me, because I need and ask God to change my husband's heart.

Since I am not a marriage counselor, I will not try to give you advice on your problems, but just give you what the Bible says about the situation. Whether those involved will listen to what the Bible has to say may be a different matter. Basically, the Bible message is "leave and cleave."

And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. (Genesis 2:23-24, verse 24 quoted in Ephesians 5:31)
And he [Jesus] answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, and said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? (Matthew 19:4-5, also Mark 10:6-7)

The financial situation may cause a problem, but as long as at least one of you has a job you should be able to survive. It may not be in the luxury that you would like, but many a young couple has lived in a one room apartment with almost no furniture, no computer, and a car that is only good enough to get to work and home.

If you are part of a truly loving congregation of the church there should be someone to help you through these problems. The great thing I have found about God's people is that they are family, even when I am in a different country and don't even speak their language.

I am praying for you.
